Things to do in Queenstown
Hogsback Arboretum
This easy stroll starts in Oak Avenue (opposite Redcoat Lane) and takes you through the Arboretum. The Arboretum is a garden of trees from all over the world, and includes several Californian Redwood trees, now well over 100 years old. Trees have markers showing their botanical and common names.
Green Madonna Loop
Grab your bike and tackle the switchbacks and hairpins along the slopes of the famous spurs of the Hogsback. The 22 km Green Madonna Loop runs through the valley and up to the beacon on King’s Neck. From here, it’s downhill to Robinson and the Madonna and Child Falls and back to the Blue Route. Take care during the rainy season and utilize the chicken run options.
Madonna and Child Waterfalls
Madonna and Child Falls is located in the blissful and serene village of Hogsback. The waterfall’s name originates from the outcrop of rock on the face of the falls which forms the shape of a “Mother and Child”.
You can reach the Madonna and Child waterfall by hiking down for a moderately steep 150 m, with the assistance of stairs and handrails at particular spots. There is a longer route via the Main Road past what is known as the ‘Big Tree’, which is an 800-year-old yellow wood. Both routes will take you through the indigenous Tyumie forest.
At the bottom of the waterfall is a pond perfect for cooling off and indulging in the peaceful surroundings. There are also other paths to further explore that stem out into the untamed forest.
